History
For over a century, The Samoset Resort has been considered Maine’s premier coastal resort location, renowned for spectacular and expansive views of Penobscot Bay and distant islands, the soft Camden Hills rising to the east, and the spacious grounds of Jameson Point. The Samoset’s history is one of people arriving from all over to enjoy this beauty.
The hotel was named “The Samoset” after the Pemaquid Native Americans, who were one of the first people to greet the Mayflower Pilgrims. While visiting a tribe near Plymouth, Samoset emerged from the woods and declared “Welcome, Welcome, Englishmen.” The astonished Pilgrims discovered he had learned English from fishermen who had visited the Maine coast some years earlier. Thus, Samoset became a symbol of hospitality throughout New England, and one that lives on at our resort.
The Samoset has emerged as a year-round destination resort and conference center for people from all over the world, and offers something for everyone in a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. The Samoset will continue the long established traditions of its grand past as it moves forward into the next century.
