History

Bar Harbor Club

Edward T. Stotesbury started construction on the exclusive waterfront oasis, the Bar Harbor Club, in 1929. This prestigious Club debuted with the grandest ball the island had ever seen on July 4, 1930. The Bar Harbor Club quickly became an exclusive haven for the town’s most illustrious summer residents such as Joseph Pulitzer, John D. Rockefeller Jr., Edward T. Stotesbury, and other movers and shakers of the day. The Board of Governors only accepted new members through nomination, seconding and scrutiny. After that, the Club’s initiation fees and dues were the easy part of membership. Sparkling late into the night during the summer season, the Bar Harbor Club was the address for notable dances, sporting competitions, games, Sunday buffets, socials, receptions, and exhibitions. The lavish costume balls and weekly dances were so popular that the best bands from New York and Philadelphia auditioned yearly for premier engagements.

Now meticulously restored, the Tudor-styled building is more glamorous than ever, providing a unique seaside venue for weddings and social events as well as business retreats of the highest caliber. The Club also offers members the ultimate in spa, tennis, and pool facilities.

Harborside Hotel & Marina Sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean on picturesque Frenchman’s Bay, the Harborside Hotel & Marina is the newest luxury hotel in central Bar Harbor, offering sublime guest experience in luxurious guest rooms, studios, and deluxe penthouse suites that are furnished in understated stylish décor that makes it easy to relax for a weekend getaway or a lengthier vacation stay.

Acadia National Park and the community of Bar Harbor, Maine, situated on Mount Desert Isle, have a long and storied history as a vacation getaway. By the mid 1800s, Mount Desert Isle was popularized through artists’ romantic depictions of the islands’ rugged mountains and wildly beautiful seascapes. From the galleries of Manhattan to the coast of Maine, Bar Harbor, then called Eden, became the premier resort destination for Victorian men and women of wealth and influence.

A century later, Bar Harbor retains its glamour as a summer vacation escape for the rich and famous cultivating the destination experience with trendy boutiques, restaurants, artisan shops, and family diversions. More than 50 years after a devastating fire, Mount Desert Island has regrown to such a beauty and natural splendor to make Acadia National Park the second most visited park in the country. You can still explore the many miles of carriage trails originally created by John D. Rockefeller back in the 1920s.

Whether you drive, explore on foot, by bike, or horse and carriage, the park offers a fantastic landscape of mountains, ocean and forest like no other.

The Regency Stone House

Perched on the rocks and nestled at the ocean’s edge, this beautiful stone mansion, with stained-glass windows and incredible handcrafted woodwork, offers one of Bar Harbor’s most incredible ocean views.

The Stone House welcomes 130 guests.
